Even though friends and family KNOW that we work at home, sometimes they can’t seem to remember (or want to remember) that we actually DO work! They tend to drop by whenever they want to, or call with something for us to do because “we have more time”! Sometimes I get aggravated because they don’t seem to believe that I actually “WORK” when I’m at home!

Here are some ideas on how you can let people know that you are working, even though it’s at home. Have you ever tried one of these?

1. Put a sign on your door that says you’re working. Or put a “closed” sign on your door, and if someone shows up, don’t answer the door.
2. As nicely as you can, tell your friends what your business hours are and that they are more than welcome to come and visit AFTER business hours.
3. Park your car somewhere other than in your driveway. Then they will think you’re not at home!
4. If you have a regular work schedule, let your family and friends know. Eventually, the routine will sink in with them and they will learn not to bother you when you’re working.
5. If friends/family keep calling when you are working, let them know that you can’t talk right now, but you can later when you’re not working. Hopefully, they’ll eventually get the picture.
6. Don’t answer the door or home phone during working hours (if you have a separate business line).
7. Always answer the phone with a business greeting during business hours.
8. If someone calls asking you to do a favor, tell them you’ll have to check your appointment book.
9. Treat your business like a REAL business. If you don’t, others won’t.
