Readers Digest is still one of my most favorite magazines. I remember growing up and reading them month after month - enjoying the jokes and the common sense articles.
The recent issue for July 2008 had an interesting article in it. It was entitled “Why We’re Happy”. The subtitle read “Turns out, happiness has a lot to do with values - and it’s key to our prosperity as a nation.”
The author went on to explain his five “happiness predictors”. They were:
- Happiness Predictor 1 - Faith
- Happiness Predictor 2 - Work
- Happiness Predictor 3 - Marriage and Family
- Happiness Predictor 4 - Charity
- Happiness Predictor 5 - Freedom
While I agree with most of his assessment, I disagree with one thing. I don’t need five things to make me happy, I need just one. That is my faith in Christ. If I have that, then all the others fall into place and are “gravy”. Faith in Christ gives us the ability to be happy in or out of work, with or without marriage and family, giving or receiving charity, and being slaves somewhere or free men/women.
I do agree with this comment by the author:
The data tells us that what matters most for happiness is not having a lot of things but having healthy values. Without these values, our jobs and our economy will bring us souless toil and joyless riches. Our education will teach us nothing. There will be no reason to fight - or to make peace, for that matter - to protect our way of life. Our health-care system will keep us healthier, but what’s the point of good health without a happy life to enjoy?
What is the source of your happiness today? Make it Christ and you can be happy in all things.
