Tip #2 - Handling Deadlines. This is one of the hardest problems to avoid in any business. Finish that website by Friday; get the proposal out the client by Wednesday; bake a cake for Johnny’s Birthday on Thursday. Even people with jobs outside the home struggle with deadlines. How do you handle deadlines?
Solution: First of all, learn how to deal with deadlines. Memorize the following four steps and repeat them over and over to yourself as your deadlines approach.
- Set hours.
- Set priorities.
- Know your limits.
- Get outside help when needed.
Set hours. For many of us, that’s all we need to do. When your hours for the day are done, close that office door, shut down the computer, and go. If you need to schedule more tightly for odd or extra hours, schedule by the amount of time you need to have to get the job done.
Set Priorities. Don’t let the business or the pursuit of money conflict with why you started your at-home business in the first place. Remember your priorities and why you wanted to work at home in the first place. Do not weary yourself to gain wealth, Cease from your consideration of it. Proverbs 23:4 (NASB)
Know Your Limits. How much work can you really take on? Know your limits. If you need help in this area, enlist the help of your spouse or a good friend to help you not overload yourself. If you can’t say no, they can help you say no! Turn down work if you can’t handle the workload. Overload can be a major source of home business stress.
Get outside help when needed. If your kids are old enough, hire them to handle some of the household chores or some of the mundane office work for you. Hire a teenager to come in and help if your children are younger. If you have to hire an outside professional, consider a contract worker rather than an employee. Or, if your real brave, consider having your spouse work along with you in your business. You can also barter help with other professionals or check into temporary help.
Above all, keep in mind why you started to work at home in the first place and how important that is to you!

Getting outside help is one of the hardest ones. A challenge seems to be not knowing anyone or not feeling like we can afford it. Out of necessity we’re guilty of trying to do it all.

This is something that God dealt with me on quite some time ago- knowing my limits and how much I can take on in business based on my family’s needs. So, now I have a ‘cap’ on the number of various coaching and consulting clients I will take on, the laptop goes off for the day around 3pm and I limit any after hours work as much as possible. I also hired a housekeeper to come in once a week so I have more time with the kids and less stress around the house…Blessings, Marlo Boux
